History
Family Farm & Greenhouse Since 1743
Riverside Farm is proud to be one of Maine’s oldest family operated farms. Located along the Great Works River on the border of North Berwick and South Berwick, our family has been farming here since 1743.
Starting out in 1743, Ebenezer Dennett acquired about 100 acres of wild land with the principal inhabitants being Native Americans, wolves, deer, and moose. By 1855, the farm had expanded to over 200 acres. Even back then, Riverside Farm was a special place, being a fixture in the Dennett family for all gatherings.
Generations later, the Dennetts and Tuttles joined through marriage. George William Tuttle and Jane Dennett married and had five children, one of which was George Edward Tuttle (Farmer Dave’s father). George grew up on the oldest family farm in the United States, Tuttle’s Red Barn.
In the tradition of the time, George’s oldest brother took over the Dover farm, Tuttle’s Red Barn, and George, eager to own a farm of his own, purchased Riverside Farm from his mother’s family in 1930. At the time, Riverside Farm was in debt and in general disrepair, but through George’s efforts, it was restored to a small dairy farm with a wholesale operation of tomatoes, potatoes, and corn.
Farmer Dave loved growing up here. He grew up knowing that he wanted to be a farmer as he worked in the fields with his father and his two brothers. When Dave was in his first year of college, his father had a heart attack that severely limited the work he could do. Dave left school early and started to farm full time. He purchased Riverside Farm in 1970. Dave was more passionate about the vegetable side of the business, so he closed the dairy part, and focused his efforts on growing the best vegetables possible. Dave and his wife Lorraine have since expanded into the greenhouse and decorative plant business, retailing Christmas trees and all of the delicious goods that we produce out of the farm stand. Together, with their eldest son, Ryan, they have grown a wonderful following at local farmers markets, restaurants along the Seacoast and a faithful customer base at their stand.
Riverside Farm Today
Riverside’s family roots run deep. we are currently on the 12th generation of our family stewarding this land. As of 2026, the farm had a successful transition to the next generation and is now owned and operated by Ryan and Kathleen Tuttle with Dave and Lorraine Tuttle still very much apart of the daily operations. Both generations live on the farm and the kids love helping out in the fields, at the stand, and at farmers’ markets. The next generation lives on our farm land and the kids love helping out in the fields, at the stand, and at farmers’ markets.
Our family is so very grateful for how our business has grown. One of our favorite things about running this farm is always trying something new. Whether it’s trying new varieties of fruits and vegetables or utilizing new growing methods, we take pride in knowing we are constantly striving to provide our community members with the highest quality of local produce and products possible.
